Claudio Mariotto represents the third generation of a family that has farmed vines in the Colli Tortonesi since 1921, though he was the first in his family to bottle wine under the estate's own name. Today the estate farms fifty four hectares across these Piedmont hills, split roughly evenly between Derthona, the celebrated Timorasso subzone, and other native varieties including Barbera, Freisa, Croatina, and Moscato. Mariotto has become one of the region's defining producers, helping bring international attention to a corner of Piedmont long overshadowed by its more famous neighbors.

Monleale is one of the most restrictive subzones within the Colli Tortonesi DOC, reserved exclusively for Barbera grown on marl soils similar in age and composition to those found in Barolo and Barbaresco. The appellation caps yields at 7,200 kilograms per hectare and requires a minimum of twenty months aging, at least six of them in wood, along with a minimum alcohol level of 12.5 percent. These strict standards are designed to set Monleale Barbera apart in complexity and aging potential from the more familiar Barbera of Asti or Alba.

The wine shows an intense, deep ruby red color, with a fragrant, persistent bouquet marked by ripe dark fruit and subtle earthy depth. On the palate it turns dry, robust, and well balanced, carrying real structure alongside the natural freshness that defines the subzone's marl soils. Its power and acidity make it a fitting match for roasted or braised meats, aged cheeses, or hearty regional dishes.
