Paul Hobbs grew up on a working farm in upstate New York, where his father had him taste apples of the same variety grown in orchards just miles apart, an early lesson in how much terroir shapes flavor. That insight carried him through stints as winemaker at Opus One and Simi, and later as a sought-after consultant for wineries such as Peter Michael and Catena, before he founded Paul Hobbs Winery in 1991. CrossBarn is his second label, built around the same philosophy of minimal intervention and site transparency, offered at a more accessible price point.

This Chardonnay draws primarily from estate fruit grown along the Sonoma Coast, an appellation shaped by cold ocean winds and morning fog that slow ripening and help preserve natural acidity. Partial malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel rather than oak, adding a touch of creamy texture while keeping the wine's bright, fresh character intact. The result is a cool-climate Chardonnay built for immediate enjoyment rather than long cellaring.

The nose offers fresh green apple, baked apple, and ripe pear, layered with lemon peel and a whisper of bread dough and warm spice. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied and easygoing, with vibrant acidity carrying the ripe fruit through to a long, flavorful finish touched by stony minerality. Its brightness makes it a natural match for oysters, a citrus-dressed shrimp salad, or roast chicken.

93 Points
"A fresh, fruity, juicy, crisp white that's generous in green apples, baked apples and minerals on a medium body. Subtle flavors of cream and butter come from partial malolactic conversion while maturing in stainless steel containers. Screw cap."
