2024 Schloss Gobelsburg - Gruner Veltliner Kamptal (750ml)
Schloss Gobelsburg is one of Austria's oldest wine estates, with a documented history in the Kamptal that stretches back to 1171. The Cistercian monks of Zwettl Monastery managed the property for centuries, farming without herbicides and favoring restraint over intervention, a philosophy the estate has followed organically since 1958. Today Michael and Eva Moosbrugger run the winery, working alongside Michael's mentor Willi Bründlmayer to carry that tradition into the modern era while keeping the wines precise and true to place.
The fruit for this bottling comes from young vines, all under twenty years old, planted across some of the Kamptal's most respected sites, including parcels near Lamm, Grub, and Renner. Grapes are drawn from both the lower and upper reaches of the valley, the lower slopes contributing ripeness and the higher elevations lending freshness and lift. Fermentation and aging both take place in stainless steel, preserving the variety's natural brightness without any oak influence.
The wine opens with green pear, lemon, and a whisper of crushed sage, backed by the telltale white pepper spice of Grüner Veltliner and a saline, mineral finish. The palate stays lean and vivid from start to end. Pour it alongside pan seared scallops, spring vegetable tarts, or a soft, tangy goat cheese.
