The Mottura estate's story began in 1933, when Sergio's uncle Alessandro, an engineer working on the Milan-Naples railway, recognized the promise of this stretch of countryside between Rome, Florence, and Siena and purchased land in Civitella d'Agliano. Sergio took over management in the 1960s and set about reviving Grechetto, then nearly extinct in the area, sourcing cuttings from sharecroppers who had quietly kept exceptional old vines alive for generations. The family began estate bottling in the late 1980s and converted fully to organic farming in 1991, earning certification in 1996, the same year they became the first Lazio winery to win Gambero Rosso's Tre Bicchieri award for a white wine. Sergio's son, Giuseppe, who also serves as mayor of Orvieto, now runs the estate.

This entry-level Orvieto is an equal blend of Procanico and Grechetto, hand harvested and vinified separately before assemblage, then fermented and aged in stainless steel to preserve freshness. The vineyards sit on Civitella d'Agliano's varied soils, part volcanic and part sedimentary clay, a combination that lends the wine its characteristic savory, mineral edge.

The wine shows a fresh straw yellow color with orchard fruit and white flower aromas layered over a subtle mineral base. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with good acidity and a saline finish that makes it easy at the table. It pairs nicely with bruschetta, light pasta, asparagus risotto, or simple grilled vegetables.
