2024 Shelter Winery - Spatburgunder Lovely Lilly (Pinot Noir) (750ml)
Husband-and-wife team Hans-Bert Espe and Silke Wolf farm five organic hectares near the Black Forest, on rich limestone and loess soils that give their Pinot Noirs real elegance without reliance on oak. Lovely Lilly, named for the couple's late vineyard dog, is the entry point into their range and a genuine value standout, sitting below their mid-tier Spätburgunder and top "N114" bottlings, though the fruit itself comes from the same vineyards. The wine sees 10 days of skin contact for gentle, sustaining tannins, then a year in large oak barrels with a softening malolactic fermentation. Expect a fragrant nose of cherry, raspberry, and dried flowers, moving into a dry, juicy palate with bright red berry fruit and a light, classic Pinot character. A genuinely well-priced, no-nonsense Spätburgunder from one of Baden's most respected small producers.
