2024 Skouras - Moscofilero Peloponnese Salto (750ml)
George Skouras returned home from Dijon in Burgundy with an oenology degree and, in 1986, founded his estate in Argos, becoming one of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine renaissance. Alongside contemporaries like Yiannis Tselepos and Evangelos Gerovassiliou, he helped rebuild a wine culture that had faded under centuries of restrictive governance, redefining what the Peloponnese could produce. While Skouras first made his name with Megas Oenos, a red blend of Agiorgitiko and Cabernet Sauvignon, Moscofilero has become the white the estate is most closely associated with, sourced from the cool, sandy plateau of Mantineia in Arcadia.
Salto is made from a distinct clone of Moscofilero, sometimes called Mavrofilero for its darker skins, grown at roughly 650 meters on that same high-altitude plateau. The grapes are mostly free-run juice, fermented in tank with indigenous yeasts, then given a short aging on the fine lees to preserve aromatic intensity. This wild-yeast approach yields a wine with higher acidity and more mineral drive than Skouras's classic Moscofilero bottling, and it is released later in the year, built more for the table than the aperitif hour.
Aromas of citrus and crushed stone lead the way, with the grape's usual floral character kept in check in favor of tension and precision. The palate is vibrant and taut, with a faint mineral edge on the finish. It pairs well with grilled octopus, fresh oysters, or a lemony orzo salad.
