2024 Vina Cordelia - Amfora Rosa del Peru San Luis Potosi (750ml)
Viña Cordelia carries an unusual family story dating back to 1948, when the Abella family, Catalan exiles from the Spanish Civil War, settled in San Luis Potosí. There they began making mistela, a fortified wine crafted from the Rosa del Perú (a.k.a. Listan Prieto/Mission) grape, both to earn a living and to keep their heritage alive, alongside planting olive and almond trees. Bodega construction began in 1965, and by 2014 the family expanded into red, rosé, and white wine production using classic varieties like Chardonnay, Malbec, Cabernet, Syrah, Tempranillo, Grenache, and Nebbiolo, always alongside their signature Rosa del Perú. Today the winery is led by Jordi Abella, a descendant of the founders, and his son.
This particular bottling reimagines that heirloom variety through amphora fermentation, a technique Mexican wineries have increasingly embraced. Viña Cordelia's amphora-fermented Rosa del Perú has become notable in this movement, offering bright citrus freshness paired with real complexity on the palate, a style that sits between orange wine and rosé, shaped by the natural tannin and texture that clay vessel fermentation imparts.
This is a distinctive, food-friendly wine well suited to regional Mexican cuisine, charcuterie, and aged cheeses, best served slightly chilled.
