2025 Ameztoi - Rose Getariako Txakolina Rubentis (750ml)
The Ameztoi family has made txakolina in Getaria, a small fishing village on Spain's rugged Basque coast, for seven generations, with Ignacio Ameztoi now leading the estate's continued innovation. When most neighboring producers abandoned the indigenous red Hondarrabi Beltza grape in favor of easier, higher-yielding varieties, the Ameztoi family kept their old vines, including a Hondarrabi Beltza vineyard planted in 1840 that still forms the backbone of their signature rosé. That commitment paid off with Rubentis, the region's first pink wine, created as an homage to the historic claret-style wines once made along this stretch of coast, long before rosé became a global trend.
Rubentis is a field blend of roughly equal parts Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza, grown on traditional trellises high on the cliffs above Getaria, facing the Bay of Biscay. The two varieties are picked and co-fermented together for around three weeks in stainless steel at cool temperatures, and the wine is bottled with a touch of residual carbon dioxide that gives it its characteristic light spritz.
The wine shows a pale pink color with coral highlights and gentle effervescence, offering aromas of wild strawberry, cherry, pomegranate, and lemon peel touched by sea spray. The palate is light-bodied and crisp, with lively acidity and a salty, mineral finish. It's a natural match for oysters, grilled seafood, ceviche, or simple Basque pintxos.
