Ca'Marcanda is Angelo Gaja's estate in Bolgheri, born in 1996 out of his ambition to bring the Gaja name to Tuscany's Alta Maremma coast. The estate takes its name from a Piedmontese dialect phrase meaning "the house of endless negotiations," a nod to the many trips it took to finally acquire this stretch of coastal land. Vistamare, meaning "sea view," pokes fun at the way that phrase gets used by coastal hoteliers, since the vineyards here really do sit on a sweet hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, catching the marine breeze and abundant sunlight that shape the wine's character.

A blend built around Vermentino, with Viognier and Fiano rounding things out, the 2025 vintage ferments in stainless steel before resting briefly in oak. Tasted in preview, it pours a bright straw yellow and opens with an expressive nose of white peach, quince, and fresh tarragon, joined by white grapefruit and a distinct saline edge. The palate is medium bodied, fresh, and energetic, with the Viognier component adding extra lift to the blend this year. This is a wine still building toward its final shape, one that should gain more texture and polish with a bit of bottle age.

Serve chilled alongside grilled fish, shellfish, or light Mediterranean fare.

96 Points
"Tasted as a preview, the 2025 Vistamare pours a bright straw yellow hue and has an expressive aromatic profile, with notes of white peach, quince, fresh tarragon, and white grapefruit, along with a saline edge. Medium-bodied, it has appealing freshness and good energy, and I expect it to flesh out further with time, gaining more texture and polish. As always, it’s a blend that includes Vermentino, Viognier, and Fiano, though the Viognier seems to shine more vividly within the fabric of this vintage."
