2025 Cottanera - Etna Rosato DOC (750ml)
Cottanera traces its origins to 1962, when Francesco Cambria left a career in Messina to purchase one hundred hectares of vineyards and hazelnut groves near his birthplace of Randazzo, on Etna's northern slope. For years he simply sold his grapes to a local cooperative, but in the late 1980s his sons, Guglielmo and Enzo, built a winery to bottle their own wine from Sicily's indigenous varieties, releasing the first bottles under the Cottanera name in the mid-1990s, a nod to an ancient village that once stood along the family's vineyards on the banks of the Alcantara River. Following Guglielmo's death, the estate is now guided by Enzo alongside Guglielmo's children, Mariangela, Francesco, and Emanuele, continuing a hands-on approach to farming that still relies heavily on local families for vineyard work and harvest.
This rosato is made entirely from Nerello Mascalese, a grape believed to take its name from the Mascali plain between Etna and the sea, sourced from vineyards in the Diciassettesalme contrada on Etna's northern slope, where volcanic and alluvial soils combine with high elevation to build complexity without excess weight.
The wine bursts with floral notes of iris, wisteria, and rose, layered with fresh aromatic herbs. It's a rich, complex, flavorful rosé that reflects the distinctive character of Etna's volcanic soil. Enjoy it with grilled fish, light pasta, or simple Mediterranean appetizers.
