2025 De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay, Robertson (750ml)
De Wetshof is regarded as one of the pioneers of Chardonnay in South Africa. Located 160km north of Cape Town, the Robertson Valley is ideally situated on slopes overlooking the Breede River, where chilly southern ocean breezes funnel up through the mountains and cool the vines throughout the growing season. High concentrations of limestone in the soil make this one of the finest terroirs for white varieties in the Cape. The Bon Vallon is their signature entry-level Chardonnay — unwooded, made entirely in stainless steel, and aged on its lees for six months. The result is a brisk, clean freshness leading into a wide spectrum of classic flavours: citrus, wild flowers, grilled nuts, and a nuanced minerality on the finish. The 2025 shows a nice interplay between pear and stone fruit with underlying zip and minerality — drink 2026–29. Consistently scores 90–91 points from Tim Atkin, and the 2018 was named one of the top ten Chardonnays in the world at the Chardonnay du Monde competition in Burgundy.
