2025 De Wetshof - Chardonnay Robertson Limestone Hill (750ml)
De Wetshof has been a fixture of South African fine wine since the 1970s, established as the first registered wine estate in the Robertson Wine Valley. The De Wet family built the property's reputation on Chardonnay, playing a pioneering role in bringing the Burgundian grape to South Africa and eventually earning the estate a reputation as the country's leading Chardonnay house. Today De Wetshof produces eight distinct, site-specific expressions of the variety, with Limestone Hill standing as one of its most recognized bottlings.
Limestone Hill is sourced from vineyards planted in deep clay soils rich in limestone within the Robertson Valley, where a temperate continental climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly and fully. The wine is left entirely unwooded, a decision meant to showcase pure varietal character and the mineral signature of the site rather than any oak influence. The 2025 vintage benefited from a notably cool, mild growing season, which producers consider one of the finest in recent memory for Cape Chardonnay.
The wine opens with grapefruit, pear, and citrus blossom, layered with a nutty, chalky complexity and a fresh, balanced finish. Ripe pineapple and baked apple notes add roundness without any oak-driven sweetness. Pair it with grilled fish, roast chicken, or fresh oysters.
