2025 Lauer, Peter - Riesling Barrel X Feinherb (750ml)
Weingut Peter Lauer is one of the defining estates of Germany's Saar region, run today by winemaker Florian Lauer, whose style stands in deliberate contrast to that of his famous neighbor Egon Müller. Rather than chasing sweetness, Lauer builds his wines around natural yeast fermentation and a focus on dry-leaning texture, giving his Rieslings a deeper, more structured character while still preserving the purity and mineral drive the Saar is known for.
Barrel X is Florian's benchmark expression of an off-dry, or feinherb, Saar Riesling, blended from vineyards across four villages: Ayl, his home base, along with Saarburg, Wawern, and Wiltingen. Each site contributes something distinct, with Ayl and Wawern lending fruit and power, Saarburg its racy acidity, and Wiltingen a touch of spice. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters in a pneumatic press, with the juice occasionally pumped back over the skins for a brief maceration before fermentation begins.
The result is a wine where residual sugar and acidity meet in near-perfect balance, closer to biting into ripe stone fruit than anything overtly sweet. Expect bright citrus and orchard fruit layered over the slate-driven minerality typical of the Saar, with a lively, textured finish. It shines alongside spicy dishes like Thai curry, tacos, or fried fare such as tempura and fish and chips.
