Asbach Privatbrand 8 Year Old Weinbrand Brandy (750ml)

If the 21 Year Selection is Asbach at its most contemplative, the Privatbrand 8 Year is Asbach at its most alive. Hugo Asbach originally created the Privatbrand back in 1908 — strictly limited and reserved exclusively for family and friends — a private reserve that only later became available to the world. Lucky us.

Matured for at least 8 years in small Limousin oak barrels and finished through Asbach's closely guarded maturing and refining process, the Privatbrand is distilled exclusively from selected wines sourced from the finest wine-growing areas. The nose offers orange zest, vanilla, and cinnamon. On the palate it is smooth with a lively kick — black pepper leads, followed by caramel and a hint of sweet sherry.  The finish is persistent and full-bodied, closing on notes of ripe fruit.

It won Gold at the 2013 World Spirits Awards, and fans who know it well regularly rank it above standard VSOP Cognacs at twice the price. The perfect entry point into Germany's proudest — and most underrated — spirits tradition. Excellent neat, over ice, or as the base of an unexpectedly sophisticated sidecar.
