Balvenie 14 yr Caribbean Cask Whiskey 750ml
The Balvenie Distillery in Dufftown, Speyside, was founded by William Grant, a former cattle herder and shoemaker's apprentice who worked his way up to bookkeeper at Mortlach Distillery before eventually building his own distillery on land near Balvenie Castle. Balvenie has since become known for controlling nearly every stage of production in-house, from malting its own barley to full-cycle maturation and bottling. The Caribbean Cask expression was created by longtime malt master David Stewart, who devised the finishing process himself and has overseen Balvenie's whisky for decades.
Production begins with 100% malted barley, distilled and matured for the majority of its 14 years in traditional American oak casks. Toward the end of maturation, the whisky is transferred into casks that previously held Caribbean rum for a finishing period, a technique that introduces tropical warmth without overwhelming the underlying Speyside character. The finished whisky is bottled at 43% ABV.
The nose brings ripe mango, pineapple, and guava alongside creamy toffee, brown sugar, and light oak spice. On the palate, that tropical fruit continues, joined by vanilla, malted milk biscuit, and a gentle rum-driven sweetness, while the malt character stays soft rather than overtly grassy. The finish is long, warm, and lingering, closing on toffee and light oak.
