2024 Barkan - Pinot Noir Negev Classic (750ml)
Barkan traces its roots to the late nineteenth century, though the winery as it exists today took shape in 2000, when a new, technologically advanced facility rose at Hulda kibbutz on the Judean plain. That investment turned Barkan into one of Israel's largest wine producers, bottling well over a million bottles a year across several tiers that range from the everyday Classic series up through Barrel Reserve, Winemaker's Choice, Altitude, and Superieur bottlings.
This Pinot Noir draws its fruit from a vineyard near Mitzpe Ramon, deep in the Negev's high desert, where warm days give way to notably cool nights. That swing in temperature is exactly what Pinot Noir needs to ripen properly, a balance the grape rarely finds elsewhere in Israel, making this a distinctive expression of a notoriously finicky variety grown far outside its usual comfort zone.
The wine offers fresh strawberry aromas layered with black cherry and a touch of mint, backed by soft yet noticeable tannin. Medium-bodied with a crisp finish, it stays light on its feet throughout. Its bright fruit and gentle structure make it a natural match for grilled salmon, roasted veal, or a simple herb-roasted chicken.
