Bluecoat Gin 750ml
Bluecoat American Dry Gin comes from Philadelphia Distilling, founded in 2005 as the first craft distillery to open in Pennsylvania since before Prohibition. The company launched Bluecoat a year later, naming it for the revolutionary soldiers who once challenged the status quo in the city where American independence was declared. Bluecoat became the first gin to put the term American Dry Gin on its label, deliberately breaking from London Dry convention, and remains distilled in Philadelphia today under the ownership of Heaven Hill Brands, which acquired the brand in 2022.
The gin is built from a proprietary blend of roughly a dozen certified organic botanicals, macerated in high-proof neutral grain spirit before being distilled in a custom, hand-hammered copper pot still. Where London Dry styles push juniper to the forefront, Bluecoat uses a softer, rounder Croatian juniper and roughly ten times the citrus of a typical London Dry, drawing on American citrus peels alongside angelica root and coriander seed. The finished spirit is bottled at 94 proof.
The nose leans woody and lightly resinous, with bitter orange, Meyer lemon, and coriander layered over the mellow juniper. On the palate, bright citrus takes the lead, backed by earthy coriander and a gentle herbal warmth from the angelica root. The finish stays clean and citrus-forward, giving the gin a lighter, more approachable character than classic juniper-driven styles.
