Bunnahabhain was built in 1881 on the north-east coast of Islay, overlooking the Sound of Islay near Caol Ila, and was accessible only by boat until a single-track road connected it to the outside world in 1960. The distillery originally supplied whisky for blending, playing a central role in famous names like Famous Grouse, Cutty Sark, and Black Bottle, before re-emerging as a single malt producer following a brief closure in the early 1980s. Its pear-shaped stills, the tallest on Islay, carry unusually long swan necks that keep heavier flavor compounds from reaching the top, yielding a lighter, more delicate spirit despite the distillery's coastal, often sherried reputation.

Stiùireadair, meaning helmsman in Scots Gaelic, is selected from first and second-fill sherry casks drawn from varying ages and warehouse locations across the distillery. This construction was designed to spotlight Bunnahabhain's coastal character while retaining the sherry influence long associated with its core range. The whisky is unpeated, non-chill filtered, and bottled without added color at 46.3% ABV, a higher strength than many entry-level single malts.

The nose offers dried fruit, sea spray, and creamy toffee with a hint of brine. On the palate, sherry sweetness meets roasted nuts, cinnamon, and malted barley, finishing long and warm with dried apricot, salted caramel, and a touch of oak spice.

The name might look somewhat intimidating, but it is easily pronounced as stew-radhur, and means Helmsman, a reference to the sea-going influence on this distillery. This whisky has been created by Dr. Kirstie McCallum, the master blender of Bunnahabhain, who has blended together whisky of different ages from first and second fill Sherry casks, found in the distillery's coastal warehouses. This is a rich and vibrant whisky, with a full sherry influence and lovely maritime edge. Drinkers should expect notes of sea spray, dried fruit, toffee and dark oak. The whisky is an unpeated Islay malt, is non chill filtered, and is bottled at 46.3% ABV which allows the flavours of the dram to really take hold. The packaging features an anchor and a rope, perfect for recalling the coastal elements to this fine dram!"
