Codigo 1530 Joven Ancestral Mezcal 750ml
Código 1530 was founded as a tequila house before expanding into mezcal, and the brand's roots trace back to a private family stock only shared among friends before becoming a commercial label. Federico "Fede" Vaughan serves as CEO and co-founder, and the mezcal program grew out of a partnership between the company and a single village of artisanal producers in Oaxaca rather than a large commercial distillery.
This joven ancestral expression is made with 100% papalome maguey, sourced from a network of mezcaleros in the San Juan del Rio region of Oaxaca. Production follows traditional ancestral methods from start to finish: the agave is roasted in earthen fire pits, then crushed by hand rather than by mechanical tahona, and the resulting must ferments naturally in animal hide vats before undergoing distillation in small clay pots, a technique that predates copper stills in the region.
The nose opens with sweet smoke and earthy forest floor notes, giving way to a palate built on saline minerality, honey, and pastry cream sweetness. Cantaloupe and vanilla add a soft fruitiness, while a spicy, nutty finish of roasted hazelnut lingers. The clay-pot distillation lends a distinctive mineral edge that sets this bottling apart from espadín-based mezcals.
