Compass Box Crimson Casks Blended Scotch Whisky 750ml
Compass Box was founded in London in 2000 by American entrepreneur John Glaser, a former International Marketing Director at Johnnie Walker who set out to reinvent how blended Scotch is perceived. Operating as an independent bottler and blender rather than a distillery, the company sources individual casks from across Scotland and married them into distinctive, boutique-style expressions, all matured without chill filtration or added coloring. Glaser stepped down from the company in early 2024 after 23 years at the helm, with whiskymaking director James Saxon now leading the blending team that continues his approach.
Crimson Casks was introduced as part of a refreshed core range, built from malt whiskies matured in first-fill oloroso sherry butts alongside custom French oak barrels seasoned specifically to draw out spice and intensity from the wood. The red wine and sherry cask influence lends the whisky its deep crimson hue, and components are blended and married before bottling at 46% ABV without chill filtration, in keeping with Compass Box's broader philosophy that the cask shapes the character of the final whisky.
The nose opens with chocolate fudge cake, clove, and cardamom, layered with plum jam and redcurrant jelly. On the palate, rich cherry, toffee, and toasted oak build toward a long finish of raisin, honey, and brown sugar.
