Compass Box The Peat Monster Whiskey 750ml

Compass Box was founded in 2000 by John Glaser, a former Johnnie Walker marketing director who set out to build a whisky company around creative blending rather than in-house distilling. The company sources single malt and grain whiskies from established Scotch distilleries, then blends, matures, and bottles them under its own transparent, well-documented recipes. The Peat Monster traces its roots to 2003, when a New York retailer commissioned Compass Box to create a bespoke, intensely peaty blend called simply The Monster. Its popularity led Glaser to release a version to the wider market the following year, and it has since grown into the brand's best-selling expression and the peated anchor of its core lineup.

The Peat Monster is a blended malt built primarily from Islay single malts, with the current recipe drawing heavily on Caol Ila and a smaller portion of Laphroaig, both matured in refill hogsheads. A tiny fraction of Highland malt, aged in custom French oak barrels with a heavy toast, rounds out the blend and adds a touch of structure. The component whiskies are married together for several months before bottling at 46% alcohol by volume, without chill filtration or added coloring.

The nose delivers layered peat smoke with a maritime edge, backed by driftwood, sea spray, and a touch of spiced apple. On the palate, that smoky character continues alongside vanilla creaminess and a gentle sweetness that keeps the peat from turning harsh. The finish lingers with more smoke, floral notes of rose and violet, and a last touch of warming spice. It's best appreciated slowly, either neat or with a splash of water to open it up.
