Cutty Sark Whiskey 750ml

Cutty Sark was created on March 23, 1923, by Berry Bros. & Rudd, the London wine and spirits merchant that has traded from No. 3 St. James's Street since 1698. Aiming to offer American drinkers a lighter alternative to the heavier, smokier Scotch typical of the era, the partners built a paler blend and named it after the Cutty Sark, a famous clipper ship that had recently docked in London and once held the record as the fastest vessel of its kind. The whisky became a favorite target for smuggling during Prohibition, and by 1961 it had become the first Scotch to sell over a million cases annually in the US. Ownership has since passed through Berry Bros. & Rudd, then Edrington, and today rests with La Martiniquaise.

The classic Cutty Sark blend combines roughly 70% grain whisky with 30% malt, with Glenrothes and Glen Moray providing the bulk of that malt component. The component whiskies are matured separately, largely in American oak casks that lend subtle vanilla and light oak character while keeping the final color pale, before being brought together and married for consistency. The finished blend is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.

The nose is fresh and inviting, with grassy, floral notes alongside cut herbs and a touch of custard sweetness. On the palate, that character turns balanced and lively, carrying light vanilla and caramel over a gentle Speyside sweetness with a whisper of smoke underneath. The finish is smooth and rounded, fading gently rather than lingering. It mixes well but holds its own served neat or on the rocks.
