Darvelle Frères is bottled under the auspices of the historic Cognac house of Prunier, though the brandy itself is labeled simply as brandy rather than Cognac since it is produced outside the delimited region. The Prunier family's trade dates back to around 1700, when Jean Prunier built a reputation shipping wine and Cognac across the world. When Alphonse Prunier died in 1918 without heirs, his widow called on her nephew, Jean Burnez, to carry the business forward, and it has stayed in that branch of the family ever since.

Because it falls outside the Cognac appellation, Darvelle Frères is free from the strict geographic and production rules that govern true Cognac, giving the house more flexibility in sourcing and blending its eaux-de-vie. The brandy is aged and blended using techniques the Prunier family refined over generations in its Cognac cellars, drawing on decades of institutional knowledge even though the finished spirit carries the broader brandy designation.

This is a big, generous pour, leaning sweet and boozy with rich caramel aromas and flavors up front. Plenty of spice carries through the palate, and the finish turns distinctly saline, a mouthwatering, savory counterpoint to the caramel richness that runs throughout.
