Doc Swinson's Alter Ego Straight Rye Finished Rum Casks Whiskey 750ml
Doc Swinson's began this expression as an experimental project after the team found themselves with a surplus of aged rum casks from Trinidad, Venezuela, and Jamaica alongside a batch of recently emptied bourbon barrels. Rather than let those rum casks go to waste, they turned to the solera method, an old-world blending and aging technique in which younger whiskey is continually added to older barrels, applying it to rye at a time when rum cask finishing was still a rarity in the category.
The blend starts with two straight ryes from MGP, a 95 percent rye recipe and a lower-rye mash bill built with corn, both aged five years or more before being combined into a base spirit of roughly 73 percent rye. That blend is proofed down and added to the top row of the rum cask solera, where it rests without further manipulation before each pull is proofed to bottle strength. The final whiskey is bottled at 95 proof, non-chill filtered, and took Double Gold honors at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
The nose offers light oak and drizzled caramel, setting up a palate built on fig, poached pear, cinnamon, and a whisper of anise. The rum cask influence brings a honeyed sweetness that never overwhelms, letting the rye's natural spice and herbaceous character continue to show through underneath. It finishes warm and balanced, closing the loop between Caribbean rum and classic American rye.
