Domaine de Charron (20 yr) 2003 Barrel #86 Bas-Armagnac 750ml
Domaine de Charron is a family estate in Villeneuve-de-Marsan, in the Landes department of Gascony, revived in 1985 by two brothers descended from Jacques and Claude Lartigue, whose great-grandmother's vineyards in nearby Perquie first produced the family's Armagnac. Owner Jean-Philippe Balay now oversees the domaine, working exclusively with Baco, the grape variety best suited to the estate's sandy Fauves soil, and filling a brand-new oak barrel for every single vintage rather than reusing casks across years.
This 2003 vintage was distilled in a traditional wood-fired copper still at just over 52 percent, then aged in barrel number 86, one of the 420-liter pedunculate oak casks the estate commissions from a local cooper for each harvest. The barrel combines heavy and medium toast levels to shape the spirit's character over its seventeen years of maturation, and like all Domaine de Charron releases, it is bottled at full cask strength without any reduction.
The nose is rich, lightly oaked, and built around notes of stewed yellow fruit. On the palate, the alcohol shows itself without aggression, revealing cooked prune and warm spice alongside a gentle touch of rancio. The finish runs long, closing on a note of coffee. This is a structured, sipping Armagnac best enjoyed neat, ideally paired with dark chocolate or a strong espresso.
