E & J V.S. Brandy 1.75L

Ernest and Julio Gallo founded their namesake winery in Modesto, California in 1933, building it into the largest wine producer in the world by volume. The brothers sold their first brandy under the Cream of California label back in 1938, continuing a tradition of California brandy production that traces to the Spanish missions of the late eighteenth century. Following Prohibition, surplus grape harvests pushed many California producers toward brandy distillation, and the Gallos launched the modern E&J brand in 1975, which went on to become the top selling brandy in the United States.

E&J VS is blended from a variety of California grapes, distilled and then aged a minimum of two years in oak barrels, the threshold required for the VS, or Very Special, designation borrowed from Cognac terminology. Rather than following the heavier, more structured style associated with European brandies, the Gallos aimed for something lighter bodied and smoother, suited as much to mixing in cocktails as to sipping on its own. That lighter California style remains the defining characteristic across the E&J range.

The result shows balanced vanilla and caramel notes built up through oak aging, with a smooth, approachable mouthfeel and mellowed edges. It stays straightforward and versatile rather than complex, designed for everyday drinking and easy mixing.
