Estrella Damm has its roots in 1876, when August Küntzmann Damm and his cousin Joseph, both Alsatian refugees who had fled the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War, opened a brewery in Barcelona. What began as a small operation grew into S.A. Damm, now the oldest brewery in Catalonia and one of the most recognized names in Spanish beer, still closely tied to the city that gave it its start.

Estrella Damm is still brewed according to August Damm's original 1876 recipe, built on nothing more than barley malt, rice, and hops. The rice is a deliberate departure from typical Central European lagers, lightening the body and giving the beer a character better suited to the Mediterranean climate and its cuisine. The result is a pale lager that comes in at 5.4 percent alcohol by volume, brewed to be crisp and easy-drinking rather than heavy or overtly bitter.

In the glass it pours a bright golden color with a light, foamy head. The aroma is grainy and faintly floral, while the palate is clean and refreshing, with gentle malt sweetness balanced by a soft, herbal bitterness. It pairs naturally with tapas, grilled seafood, or a simple paella.
