Hijos de Rivera traces back to 1906, when José María Rivera Corral returned to Galicia after years in Mexico and Cuba and opened a brewery and ice factory in A Coruña, naming it La Estrella de Galicia in homage to an earlier venture he had run in Veracruz. More than a century later, the company remains in the hands of the Rivera family, now in its fifth generation.

Especial was first brewed in 1972, when the company opened a larger, modern facility in A Coruña's La Grela district and christened the new beer Especial Rivera. It remains the only beer brewed at that single production site, built from a specific wort developed for the recipe. The process takes roughly a month from start to finish, with about half of that time spent resting in cold maturation tanks to develop its character.

The beer pours a clean, bright golden color. On the nose, malt and hops sit in easy balance, while the palate turns lightly floral and herbal, with a moderate warmth and a long, pronounced hoppy finish. Pair it with Galician-style octopus, seafood empanada, or fried calamari.
