Evan Williams 1783 Small Batch is produced by Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, and named for the year Evan Williams is traditionally credited with opening Kentucky's first distillery along the banks of the Ohio River in Louisville. Historians note the claim rests largely on the word of a nineteenth century Louisville chronicler rather than hard documentation, but the story has anchored the Evan Williams brand since Heaven Hill introduced it in the 1950s, and it remains one of the company's flagship names.

This small batch bourbon is drawn from fewer than two hundred barrels using Heaven Hill's traditional sour mash process and standard mashbill of seventy-eight percent corn, ten percent rye, and twelve percent malted barley. Once bottled at a lower age and proof, the brand was updated in 2021 with a redesigned bottle, an increase in average barrel age to roughly six to eight years, and a bump in strength to 90 proof, where it remains today.

The nose offers oaky vanilla, sautéed butter, and buttered sweet corn. On the palate, the bourbon turns semi-sweet, oaky, and honeyed, balanced by light spice. The finish is lean and off-dry, closing with a touch of understated elegance.
