Francis Darroze became known as one of the most respected figures in Bas-Armagnac, tracing his path back to his family's restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan, where fine food and Gascon eaux-de-vie shaped his lifelong pursuit. Beginning in the late 1960s, he traveled the region seeking out rare individual casks from small growers, and the house he built now works with roughly thirty partner domaines, still guided today by his son, oenologist Marc Darroze, from cellars in Roquefort and Labastide d'Armagnac.

Les Grands Assemblages is Marc Darroze's blended range, built from Armagnacs of varied soils, vintages, and grape varieties, distinct from the single-estate bottlings of the house's Unique Collection. This 40 Year expression takes its stated age from the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend, meaning every component has spent at least four decades in barrel. At this age, the quality of the oak becomes especially decisive, since only the finest barrels can deliver real complexity and finesse after so many years of contact with the wood, and as with all Darroze releases, proof is reached solely through natural evaporation rather than dilution.

The color is a deep amber with orange reflections. The nose shows fresh woodiness layered with cinnamon and licorice, while the palate delivers a full, rounded explosion of flavor supported by soft, well-integrated tannins. The finish is exceptionally long and aromatic. Best enjoyed neat as a slow, contemplative digestif.
