Glendronach "Ode To The Embers" Sherry Smoke Single Malt Whisky

GlenDronach was founded in 1826 by James Allardice in the Valley of Forgue near Huntly in the Scottish Highlands, and its Gaelic name translates to "valley of the blackberries." The distillery has built its reputation on traditional methods, still turning barley by hand on its malting floor, and on a deep commitment to sherry cask maturation using Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks sourced from Spain. Now owned by Brown-Forman, GlenDronach continues to be guided by Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie, whose work has expanded the distillery's range while staying rooted in its sherried house style.

Ode to the Embers belongs to The Master's Anthology, a trio of expressions Barrie created to explore different facets of GlenDronach's character. Where the distillery is best known for unpeated, sherry driven whisky, this release nods to a nineteenth century practice of drying malted barley over peat fires, producing a genuinely rare peated GlenDronach. The spirit is matured in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, layering smoke over the distillery's signature richness. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 48.4% ABV.

The nose brings smoldering embers and earthy peat alongside dark honey, dried figs, and orange peel. On the palate, dark chocolate and treacle from the Pedro Ximénez casks meet nutty, leathery Oloroso character and a robust smokiness, with baked apple and clove appearing midway through. The finish runs long and warming, letting sherry sweetness and smoke settle together, and it suits a dark chocolate torte well.
