Grand Marnier traces back to 1880, when Louis-Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle had the idea of blending cognac with the essence of bitter bigarade oranges, an unprecedented pairing at the time. The house he led, Marnier-Lapostolle, had already been distilling in the Cognac region since 1827 and remains headquartered at the Château de Bourg-Charente. Louis-Alexandre reportedly preferred his own liqueur with an extra splash of aged cognac stirred in for a more intense character, and this cuvée was created as a tribute to that personal habit, giving his name to a richer, more cognac-forward expression of the original recipe.

The blend leans heavily on cognac, drawing on VSOP eaux-de-vie sourced from the finest growing areas of the Cognac region and aged in a mix of Tronçais and Limousin oak for added depth. That cognac makes up the majority of the final liqueur, with a smaller portion of orange liqueur built from bigarade orange essence rounding out the blend. The result is bottled at 40 percent alcohol by volume, drier and more clearly cognac-driven than the standard Cordon Rouge bottling.

In the glass it shows a warm amber color with copper and orange highlights. The nose carries candied orange alongside citrus zest and bergamot, while the palate layers macerated citrus fruit with subtle notes of pine and Earl Grey tea. The finish is long, intense, and warmly citrus-laced.
