Grand Marnier traces back to 1880, when Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle, working with his family's distilling business near Paris, set out to combine two very different spirits into one recipe. His creation, later known as Cordon Rouge for its signature red ribbon, paired the character of French cognac with the intensity of bitter orange, a formula the house has kept largely unchanged since its debut at receptions for European royalty in the late nineteenth century.

Production today takes place at the Château de Bourg-Charente in the heart of the Cognac region. Green bitter oranges of the Citrus Bigaradia variety are dried in the sun, then their peels are macerated in neutral alcohol and slowly distilled to extract the essential oils. The cognac base is distilled separately from Ugni Blanc grapes using traditional copper pot stills. The two distillates are then blended, a step the house calls the grand marriage, and rested in oak vats for several months so the flavors integrate before bottling.

The liqueur pours a bright topaz with amber and gold tones. On the nose, candied orange zest and vanilla lead, backed by cognac's warmth. The palate is full and layered, with bitter orange balanced against hazelnut, toffee, and a touch of dried fruit, finishing long and smooth. It works well poured over ice, stirred into a Sidecar, or splashed over crepes.

"Grand Marnier is a French brand of liqueurs. The brand's best-known product is Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge, an orange-flavored liqueur created in 1880 by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle. It is made from a blend of Cognac brandy, distilled essence of bitter orange, and sugar. Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is 40% alcohol."
