Justerini & Brooks traces its origins to 1749, when Italian-born Giacomo Justerini settled in London and opened a wine and spirits shop with his partner George Johnson in the fashionable Pall Mall district. The company changed hands in 1831 when Alfred Brooks purchased it, giving the firm its lasting name. After Prohibition ended in the United States, the company developed a new blend specifically for that market, releasing it in 1933 under the name J&B Rare, a whisky that went on to become the top-selling Scotch in America by the mid-1970s.

J&B Rare is a blended Scotch whisky, meaning it combines both malt and grain whiskies rather than coming from a single distillery. The blend draws on roughly forty different whiskies, leaning heavily on Speyside malts for their light, fruity character, along with grain whiskies that add sweetness and help the individual malt notes come through more clearly. It carries no age statement and is typically bottled around 40 percent alcohol by volume.

The whisky opens with red apple, malt, and a faint hint of smoke on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied, starting sweet before a touch of sharpness and oak emerge, finishing medium-long with lingering malt and a whisper of peat.
