Liquore Strega Liqueur 700ml
Liquore Strega comes from Strega Alberti Benevento, a family-run distillery founded in 1860 by Giuseppe Alberti in the southern Italian city of Benevento, a town long associated with legends of witches gathering under a magical walnut tree. Alberti developed the recipe with his apothecary father, drawing on an old herbal tradition tied to the region's folklore, and named the liqueur Strega, meaning witch. The company remains in the same historic building beside the Benevento train station and is now run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Alberti family, who still guard the original formula closely.
The liqueur is distilled from roughly seventy herbs, spices, and botanicals sourced from Europe, Central America, and Asia, including mint, fennel, juniper, iris, and cinnamon. Saffron gives the finished spirit its signature golden hue. After distillation, the liqueur rests and ages before bottling, allowing its many botanical elements to soften and integrate. The final product is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume, a proof level typical of Italian herbal liqueurs while retaining a rounder, sweeter character than a standard spirit.
On the nose, Strega opens with herbal and minty aromatics layered with warm spice and a faint licorice quality from the fennel. The palate is smooth and syrupy, balancing sweetness against bitter herbal depth, with lingering notes of saffron, anise, and citrus peel. The texture is viscous and coating, finishing long and warmly spiced. It works well served chilled as a digestif or as a base for classic and modern cocktails.
