Liquori dell'Etna Fico d'India (Prickly Pear) Liqueur 700ml
Liquori dell'Etna is a Sicilian producer based in Santa Maria di Licodia, on the lower slopes of Mount Etna, where the family-run distillery draws on generations of local peasant tradition to craft fruit liqueurs rooted in the region's agricultural history. Winemaker Edoardo Strano oversees production, working with fruit grown directly in the volcanic soils surrounding the mountain. The house's range of liqueurs is built around a philosophy of using fresh, locally sourced fruit rather than concentrates or artificial flavoring, keeping each bottling closely tied to its specific growing area and harvest.
This liqueur is made from two local varieties of prickly pear, the fico d'india, harvested from cactus plants growing in Etna's mineral-rich black soils. The fruit's pulp undergoes maceration and infusion in agricultural alcohol, a traditional method that draws out its natural sugars, acidity, and aromatic compounds without cooking or distilling the fruit itself. Water and sugar are added to round out the final blend, and the liqueur is bottled at a modest 30% alcohol by volume, keeping the fruit character front and center rather than the spirit itself.
The nose offers ripe, floral prickly pear alongside citrus peel, demerara sugar, and a faint note of browned butter. On the palate, the liqueur is soft and enveloping, balancing natural sweetness with a light acidity that keeps it from tasting cloying. The texture is velvety, with a clean, fruit-driven finish that lingers pleasantly.
