Springbank distillery has run continuously in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula, since 1828, and remains one of the few Scottish distilleries to handle every step of production, from floor malting to bottling, entirely on-site. Owned by the independent J&A Mitchell and Co., it produces three distinct single malts under one roof: Springbank, the unpeated Hazelburn, and Longrow, its peated line, all made using traditional worm-tub condensers that give a heavier, oilier spirit.

Longrow revives the name of a historic Campbeltown distillery that once stood beside Springbank and was shuttered in the late nineteenth century. First produced in 1973 as an experiment to bring an Islay-style peated whisky to the mainland, Longrow Peated uses barley malted on-site to roughly 55 parts per million, then is double-distilled and matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or added coloring.

The nose leans into what enthusiasts call Campbeltown funk, with earthy peat and cold ash giving way to vanilla custard, toasted marshmallow, and orchard fruit. On the palate, smoke builds gradually alongside salted lemon, olive brine, and a touch of passion fruit. The finish is long and gently smoky, closing with coffee, sea salt, and a lingering trace of char.

"This is essentially the awesome Longrow C.V. bottling in new packaging, we're very glad it still features in the re-vamped range! Great value and great tasting!

Nose: Salt and a leathery smokiness come to the fore in a maritime combination, like a Harbourmaster's Jacket.

Palate: Light and sweet with notes of green grapes and rhubarb, a great contrast to the nose. Then comes a big blast of smoke.

Finish: That salty smokiness returns from the nose providing a deeply satisfying ending.

Overall: A great entry-level offering from Longrow perfect for Islay fans looking for something a bit different.
