Matsui Shuzo has been producing traditional Japanese spirits since 1910, based in the town of Kurayoshi in Tottori Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan and sitting within sight of Mount Daisen, a volcanic peak that rises more than a mile above the surrounding plains. The distillery draws its water from springs filtered through that volcanic stone, a soft, mineral-rich source used across its full range of sake, shochu, and whisky.

The Peated is distilled from peat-smoked malted barley, an approach reminiscent of Islay-style Scotch production, and pot distilled before resting in white oak ex-bourbon casks. Tottori's climate brings notably wide temperature swings, encouraging deeper interaction between spirit and cask so the whisky matures at a faster pace than in more stable environments. Bottled at 48% ABV without chill filtration or added color, the whisky carries the label's signature artwork, Hokusai's The Great Wave.

Fresh, toasty malted cereal aromas lead the nose, layered with earthy peat, curling smoke, and a touch of vanilla oak. The palate turns toasty and sweet, offering brown sugar, creamy vanilla, and orchard fruit wrapped in ashy smoke. The finish lingers with peat smoke and fresh apple. It suits a slow, neat pour best, letting the smoke unfold gradually.
