Nikka Coffey Malt Whiskey 750ml

Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the man widely credited as the father of Japanese whisky after studying distillation in Scotland in the early twentieth century. The company operates two distilleries in Japan, and its Miyagikyo site is home to a pair of Coffey stills imported from Scotland more than fifty years ago, originally intended for producing grain whisky. Nikka's willingness to experiment with these stills in unconventional ways reflects the same spirit of innovation that has defined the company since its founding.

Nikka Coffey Malt breaks from convention by running 100% malted barley through those Coffey stills rather than through the copper pot stills typically used for malt whisky. This continuous distillation method is rarely applied to malted barley anywhere in the world, since column stills are usually reserved for lighter grain spirits. The result is a whisky that carries the character of a single malt while taking on a smoother, richer texture more commonly associated with column-distilled spirits, bottled at 45% ABV.

On the nose, this whisky offers candied citrus, vanilla, and rich spice. The palate is dense and creamy, with cinnamon, clove, honeyed fruit, and a touch of chocolate. A long finish brings toasted oak, pipe tobacco, and a lingering trace of dried fruit, closing with gentle warmth rather than any sharp bite.
