NV Bereche - Champagne Brut Reserve VV (750ml)
Bérêche et Fils has farmed in Ludes, in the Montagne de Reims, since 1847, though it was current head Jean-Pierre Bérêche who first built the estate's independent reputation. His sons, Raphaël and Vincent, now fifth-generation, joined him in 2004 and have pushed the domaine toward biodynamic farming, having already phased out chemical herbicides by 2003. The family holds roughly nine hectares spread across four villages and several distinct terroirs.
The Brut Réserve blends Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier in roughly equal parts, drawn from Ludes, Ormes, Trépail, and Mareuil-le-Port, with vines averaging around forty years old. Most of the base wine ferments naturally in barrel, and a portion of each year's harvest is set aside to build a perpetual reserve. Malolactic fermentation is avoided, and the wine ages under cork before disgorgement with a modest dosage.
Aromas of orange oil, pear, apricot, and white flowers mingle with fresh bread, almond, and a touch of mint. The palate is medium to full-bodied and fleshy, with a pillowy texture and tangy acidity that keeps the wine lively through a long finish. Serve with grilled sausages, seafood paella, or a young Alpine cheese.
