Forte do Cego is a range from Quinta de São Sebastião, an estate whose roots in Arruda dos Vinhos date to 1755, the same year Lisbon's great earthquake struck the region. The name comes from a nearby fortification, part of the Lines of Torres Vedras built to defend Lisbon against Napoleon's forces, a nod to the estate's long history at the crossroads of Portuguese wine and warfare. While much of the property's range draws on its home vineyards near Lisbon, this particular bottling looks north to the Vinho Verde region, sourcing fruit from Portugal's cooler, Atlantic-influenced northwest to capture a lighter, fresher style.

The wine is made in the traditional Vinho Verde manner, with grapes picked slightly underripe to preserve natural acidity, then vinified to retain a gentle spritz and keep the finished wine off-dry and easy-drinking. It's built for immediate enjoyment rather than cellaring, a style meant to be poured young and often.

In the glass it shows a pale pink hue, with aromas of strawberry and pomegranate leading into citrus and red currant on the palate. Light-bodied with a soft natural fizz and bright acidity, it finishes crisp and refreshing. Serve it chilled alongside shellfish, light salads, or simple appetizers on a warm afternoon.
