NV Graham Beck - Brut Rose (750ml)
Graham Beck built his reputation as a South African wine pioneer when he purchased Madeba farm outside Robertson in 1983, determined to establish a world-class winery in a region better known at the time for bulk wine than for quality. He poured that ambition into a state-of-the-art cellar dedicated to Méthode Cap Classique, and the estate carries his name and legacy today, continuing the pursuit of fine sparkling wine even after his passing in 2010.
This non-vintage Brut Rosé blends Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both hand-picked from Robertson vineyards and whole-bunch pressed to keep the juice clean and fresh. The grapes are fermented separately before being cross-blended, sometimes with a portion of reserve wine for consistency. The wine's distinctive silver-pink hue develops from a natural enzymatic reaction during the Pinot Noir's transport to the cellar, and the blend then spends over a year on the lees before disgorgement, building its signature fine, persistent mousse.
Pale pink in the glass, the wine shows raspberry, cherry, and a touch of minerality on the nose, with a whisper of oyster shell and fresh berry running through the palate. The mousse is lively and fine, the acidity bright, and the finish long and refreshing. It suits smoked salmon canapés, fried chicken, or spicy Asian-style dishes.
