Warre's is the oldest of the British-founded Port houses in the Douro, tracing its roots back to 1670. The firm remains part of the Symington family group, which has kept its winemaking rooted in the same estates and traditions that built its reputation centuries ago. Warrior itself is considered the oldest Port brand still in continuous production, having been shipped under that name since the 1750s, its label taking its horse emblem from an early member of the Warre family.

The wine is drawn primarily from Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro Antigo, the same prized properties in the Pinhão and Rio Torto valleys that supply grapes for Warre's vintage-declared Ports, planted mainly to Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão. Each year the winemaking team sets aside particularly rich, fruit-driven lots, which mature in large oak casks at the family's lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia until judged ready for blending and bottling.

The result is deep ruby in color, with a lifted nose of blackberry, plum, and cherry laced with chocolate and spice. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, with smooth tannins and real persistence. Serve it with dark chocolate desserts, aged cheeses, or a bowl of toasted nuts.
