Old Forester was founded in Louisville in 1870 by George Garvin Brown, whose innovation of selling bourbon exclusively in sealed glass bottles earned Old Forester the distinction of being America's first bottled bourbon. The Brown family has run the company continuously ever since, now in its fifth generation. In 2019, the brand extended its legacy into rye whiskey for the first time in nearly 150 years, and this barrel strength single barrel expression marks another milestone, the first time Old Forester has released its rye completely unfiltered and undiluted straight from the barrel.

This rye is built on the same distinctive recipe as the standard release, a mash bill of 65 percent rye, 20 percent malted barley, and 15 percent corn, drawing on a historic formula tied to Normandy Rye, a brand Brown-Forman acquired in 1940. The exceptionally high malt content gives the whiskey a rich, floral base that balances the rye grain's natural peppery heat. Because each barrel is bottled individually at cask strength without adjustment, proof varies significantly from bottle to bottle, typically landing somewhere between 120 and 135, and no two barrels taste quite the same.

The nose is dessert-forward, offering creamy vanilla and lemon custard alongside rich caramel and dark brown sugar. On the palate, ripe orchard fruit and cinnamon stick meet dried dill and hazelnut, building toward a long, spice-driven finish marked by black pepper, green anisette, and crisp mint. Given its intensity, it rewards sipping neat or with a few drops of water to open it up fully.
