Old Grand-Dad Bottled-In-Bond honors Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., the pioneering Kentucky distiller known for his high-rye recipe, a legacy carried forward by his grandson, Colonel Raymond B. Hayden, who founded the brand in 1882. During Prohibition, the Bonded expression became one of the most popular whiskeys in the country, sold legally by prescription for medicinal purposes, a reputation for quality that helped carry the brand through decades of ownership changes, from the Wathen family to National Distillers and finally to Jim Beam in 1987.

This expression is made under the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, one of the earliest federal consumer protection laws, which requires that a whiskey come from a single distillation season and a single distiller, age at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottle at exactly 100 proof. Old Grand-Dad Bonded is produced at the Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, Kentucky, using the brand's signature high-rye mash bill of roughly 63 percent corn, 27 percent rye, and 10 percent malted barley, a recipe that sets it apart from most Kentucky bourbons and gives it a notably spicier, bolder character than lower-rye competitors.

On the nose, cinnamon and citrus peel lead over toasted oak and dried fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, layering sweet vanilla and dried fruit against a rye-forward warmth, while the finish runs long and peppery, closing with lingering spice that reflects the mash bill's rye backbone.
