Pierre Ferrand is a family-run house built around its own estate in Grande Champagne, the region's most prized growing area, where the family farms roughly twenty-seven hectares and distills at the historic Logis d'Angeac. In 2011, owner Alexandre Gabriel worked with cellar master Christian Guerin and cocktail historian Dave Wondrich to revive a nearly forgotten style of cognac, one built specifically for mixing rather than sipping.

The result, 1840 Original Formula, is modeled on a rare nineteenth century bottle of Pinet-Castillon Cognac from the era when cognac, not whiskey, was the standard base spirit behind the American bar. The blend uses eaux-de-vie distilled from Grande Champagne grapes on the lees, then aged in French Limousin oak. Bottled at ninety proof rather than the usual eighty, it carries more concentration and structure than a typical VS, making it sturdy enough to stand up in a mixed drink.

On the nose, ripe grape and orchard fruit meet meadow flowers, acacia blossom, and a touch of cedar. The palate is warm and clean, with citrus, black pepper spice, and a long, bright finish that keeps its character even when diluted. It was built for cocktails like the Sidecar, Cognac Julep, and old-style punches, though it holds its own poured neat as well.

"Pierre Ferrand's Original Formula 1840 weighs in at 90 proof (45%). Original Formula, however is not a johnny come lately but is a Grand Champagne Cognac based on an original ?three star? designated Cognac produced (the equivalent to today's V.S. designation) back in 1840. The original bottle of Pinet Castillion Cognac on which Original Formula is based was blended and distilled for use as a mixer in cocktails.
