Port Askaig is an independent bottling brand created by Elixir Distillers, the company founded by brothers Sukhinder and Rajbir Singh who also own The Whisky Exchange. Launched in 2009, the range takes its name from the small port town on Islay's northeast coast, directly across the water from Jura. True to independent bottling tradition, Elixir does not officially disclose which distillery supplies the malt, though industry speculation points strongly toward Caol Ila, whose stills sit just north of the village itself.

The 8 Year Old is matured in refill American oak casks, a choice that lets the character of the underlying spirit come through clearly rather than layering on heavy wood influence. It is bottled at 45.8 percent ABV, left non-chill filtered, and shown in its natural color, all approaches aimed at preserving the whisky as close as possible to how it left the cask. As the youngest age-stated release in the Port Askaig line, it was built to serve as an accessible entry point into Islay's smoky style.

The nose opens with gentle smoke alongside citrus, burnt brown sugar, apple, and honey. On the palate, that smoke turns more mineral and peaty, balanced by lingering citrus and a touch of burnt honey. The finish is medium in length, clean, and notably restrained for an Islay malt.

"An 8 year old single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Islay, bottled for Speciality Drinks' Port Askaig range. Enjoyably smokey and elegant - a neat introduction to the range.

Nose: Charcoal, salted crisps and a good squeeze of lemon.

Palate: Soft salted caramel brings a sweetness to the palate, with waves of coastal peat smoke crashing underneath.

Finish: Medium length, with a hot kick of peppercorn.
