Purpose Rye (Republic Restoratives) Whiskey 750ml
Republic Restoratives opened its doors in Washington, D.C. in 2016, founded by Pia Carusone and Rachel Gardner, who left careers outside distilling to build something from scratch. As a female-owned and led operation with no generational winemaking or distilling lineage behind it, the team set out to challenge convention and craft spirits with a clear point of view, becoming one of the city's defining craft distilleries in the process.
Purpose Rye is the distillery's first single barrel expression, built from a mash bill of 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley and released in a limited run of only 100 barrels. The whiskey rests in American oak for close to five years, drawing deep char and color from the barrel before bottling at 100 proof. Each release also carries a charitable component, with proceeds tied to organizations focused on voting access and civic engagement.
The nose opens with marshmallow cream, brown sugar, and cinnamon stick, layered with apricot and cherry pie fruit notes. On the palate, black pepper and nutmeg lead into cocoa powder, mellowing into a soft oolong tea character before a long finish that lingers like a red hot candy dissolving on the tongue. It's a straightforward, spice-forward rye built for sipping neat or building into a stirred cocktail.
