Rittenhouse takes its name from Philadelphia's historic Rittenhouse Square and dates back to the pre-Prohibition era, when Pennsylvania style rye whiskey was among the most sought-after spirits in the country. The brand survived Prohibition and wartime shortages before being reintroduced in 1948 as a four-year-old bottled-in-bond whiskey. Heaven Hill Distillery, based in Bardstown, Kentucky, acquired the Rittenhouse name in 1993 and kept the brand alive through the lean years of the whiskey market, later watching it become a favorite of bartenders during the cocktail revival of the 2000s.

This is a straight rye whiskey made from a mash bill of roughly 51 percent rye, with corn and malted barley rounding out the recipe, giving it a fuller, sweeter profile than higher-rye styles. As a bottled-in-bond spirit, it meets federal standards requiring a minimum of four years of age, production at a single distillery in one season, and bottling at exactly 100 proof. That extra strength and maturity give the whiskey enough backbone to hold its own in cocktails without losing character.

The nose carries vanilla, caramel, and orange zest with a peppery edge, while the palate turns spicier, showing ginger, allspice, and a touch of dark chocolate under its signature toffee sweetness. The finish is long and warming, with lingering baking spice and faint dried fruit. It shines equally well sipped neat or as the backbone of a Manhattan or Sazerac.
