Sagamore Spirit was founded by Under Armour's Kevin Plank and built its home base in Baltimore, staking its identity entirely on rye whiskey rather than the broader lineup most craft distilleries pursue. The distillery draws on Maryland's rye whiskey heritage, a style historically distinct from the Pennsylvania and Kentucky traditions, and while Sagamore has grown its own stock over the years, its whiskey has also drawn on sourced rye as the brand matured.

Barrel Selection whiskies are built from Sagamore's signature approach of blending a high-rye mash bill with a low-rye mash bill, with each release centered on a single standout barrel chosen by the distilling team. The blend typically lands around seven to nine years old, and because each Barrel Selection pulls from a different pairing of barrels, no two releases taste quite alike. The whiskey is bottled at a robust proof, non-chill filtered, and left with its natural color intact.

The nose opens with caramel toffee, leather, and brown sugar, joined by dark cherry and warm spice. On the palate, rye spice leads before giving way to baking spice, rich caramel, and dried fruit notes of fig or raisin, with oak tannin providing structure throughout. The finish runs long and warm, closing on toasted oak and a lingering trace of sweetness that rewards sipping neat or with a single large ice cube.
